The diploma is open to medically qualified candidates who have made a special study of the non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

The Diploma was instituted in 1992 and is presently run by the BIMM Examinations Board and administrated by the BIMM secretariat as an interim measure. It is not a University based examination and has no independent quality assurance at present. However, every effort is made to run the examination according to current PMETB standards.

It is the intention of the Examinations Board that this qualification will indicate a degree of special competence and will be of interest to doctors in hospital, private or general practice, who are responsible for helping sufferers from loco-motor disorders to lead a normal life.
